Email SeanI'm Sean Burton. I have twelve years of public school teaching experience and three years of tutoring at the college level.
I earned my bachelor's degree in English and History, and my teaching certification for grades 7–12 English Language Arts at Stony Brook University in 2013. I received my professional teaching certification in 2021.
I believe writing well is a skill worth learning at any age. Reluctant readers and writers are welcome.
Bring a reading assignment, essay draft, or a few practice questions. We can work through a difficult passage or revise a paragraph together, discussing the reasoning as we go. I'm also an artist and cartoonist.
Help with middle and high school English, from understanding an assigned reading to planning and revising an essay. Work on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and vocabulary in the context of your own writing. Build reading and study habits you can use between sessions.
SAT Reading & Writing: reading passages, grammar, and editing questions.
GRE Verbal Reasoning & Analytical Writing: vocabulary in context, close reading, and developing a clear written argument.
Work through practice questions and understand why an answer is right or wrong.
Help finding a topic, developing a draft, and revising personal statements and supplemental essays. The ideas and writing stay the student's own.
Support with research, evaluating sources, and developing an argument. Talk through your ideas, revise your writing, and prepare to explain and defend your work in a presentation. The research and submitted work stay your own.
Prepare for a class presentation, a speech, or a college interview. Work on what you want to say, practice saying it aloud, and get feedback on pacing and clarity. Rehearse answering questions as well as giving a prepared talk.
Bring a piece you're working on or an idea you'd like to develop. Work on voice, structure, and word choice, and revise with a reader in mind.
$85 per hour
Sessions are available online, in your home, or at an agreed public location.
